Taylor Swift, Miffy and 4 other icons sought on eBay in 2023

The post-pandemic boom nostalgia-based purchases and activities extends to collectibles, which are keepsakes you can hold in your hand. One of the most popular places to buy these memorabilia is eBay, where more than 25% of users who purchased something from the site in 2023 purchased at least one collectible.

On eBay, global listings for vintage toys are up about 10% this year, compared to the same time in 2022. Searches for vintage Star Wars toys are up 20%. And some rarities can fetch a lot of money. In May 2023, a unique piece “Tyler the Great Warrior” Yu-Gi-Oh! map sold on eBay for $311,211, making it the Yu-Gi-Oh! selling cards on eBay to date.

“Nostalgia is a powerful collectible driver, and we have seen strong interest in nostalgic items in our marketplace,” Gene Cook, vice president of global collectibles at eBay, told Mashable. “Whether it’s movies like Barbie, trends on social platforms, or people wanting to connect in a tangible way with toys and objects that brought them joy as children. Collecting is not just about acquiring objects, but about being part of a community, and this is true for all generations.

We analyzed some eBay trends data for 2023 to find out what people were searching for on the site this year.

Snoopy, Sonny Angel and Miffy

Cute collectibles had a good year, with Dutch rabbit Miffysoft Sonny the angels, and Snoopy is taking center stage on TikTok and Instagram. On eBay, users searched for Miffy 5,000 times per month and searches for Sonny Angel increased by more than 250% globally compared to the same period last year. This year, eBay users searched for “Snoopy” more than 18,000 times a day worldwide, and the most expensive Snoopy item sold on eBay was a never-worn item. Users searched for “Barbie” more than 14,000 times per hour, globally, in the week before and immediately after the film’s release (July 14-29). And Barbie shared the spotlight on eBay with an unlikely friend: Allan, Ken’s abandoned friend portrayed by Michael Cera in the hit film. Searches for “Allan doll” increased by more than 1,300% on eBay between July 14 and July 21, the day the film was released.
