WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Three U.S. service members were killed and 34 others injured, U.S. officials said on Sunday after a drone attack in Jordan that they link to Iranian-backed militants.

The attack represents a major escalation of tensions in the Middle East sparked by the Hamas attack in Israel on October 7 and Israel’s retaliatory strikes that devastated Gaza. TOM COTTON, U.S. REPUBLIC SENATOR FROM ARKANSAS

“The only response to these attacks must be devastating military retaliation against Iranian terrorist forces, both in Iran and throughout the Middle East.”

JACKY ROSEN, DEMOCRATIC US SENATOR FROM NEVADA

“Iran must be held responsible.”

RICK SCOTT, US SENATOR REPUBLIC OF FLORIDA

“Iran is openly questioning America’s strength and resolve through @JoeBiden’s appeasement of the world’s largest sponsor of terrorism. This must stop.”

DAN SULLIVAN, US SENATOR REPUBLIC OF ALASKA

“Iran’s terrorist proxies have crossed a red line with the killing of three courageous American service members and the wounding of dozens more.”
