Porsche’s transition to electric vehicles accelerated this week with the official reveal of the new Macan, which will be sold exclusively on battery power.

While the existing petrol-powered Macan will remain in showrooms for the next two years, from 2026 customers will only be able to purchase this second-generation electric model.

Two versions are already available to order, with the longer range option promising up to 381 miles of non-stop driving on a single charge – that’s enough to get from London to the Scottish Borders without stopping.

The Stuttgart sports car maker’s all-new electric Macan will take on other battery-powered luxury compact SUVs – think the Audi Q4 e-tron, Polestar 4 and Volvo C40.

However, expect the Macan to have the performance edge in the sector, with both drivetrains on sale from the start offering four-wheel drive and topping out at 400 hp.

In fact, Porsche itself claims that the Macan was developed to be the sportiest of them all. Jörg Kerner, vice president of the Macan product line, said: “Our goal is to offer the sportiest model in its segment.

“Thanks to its lower center of gravity as well as its precise steering, it provides a real sports car feeling.”

However, there’s more to the battery-powered SUV than just quietly blowing the competition out of the water in a drag race.

The Macan will lay “the technical foundations for other future electric models from Porsche,” says Kerner – so this is a very big deal for the brand.

As one of Porsche’s biggest sellers, the Macan will be at the heart of Porsche’s plans to phase out combustion engines and usher in a battery future that will see 80% of its global sales shift to electric from here is the end of this decade, he predicts.

This transition began in 2019 with the arrival of Taycanand the later Taycan Cross and Sport Turismo estates.

Both electric Macans have a 95 kWh battery – slightly larger than that of the Taycan.

The battery can be charged at up to 270 kW on an 800 V DC system, which should provide a 10-80% recharge in just 21 minutes.

The entry model is the Macan 4 and starts from £69,800.

Given that the base price of the Macan petrol starts from £53,400, the stereotypical EV premium continues in the eyes of the German manufacturer. To put things into perspective, the £16,400 cost chasm could buy you a brand new Toyota Aygo X!

The Macan 4 develops 402 hp, can accelerate to 100 km/h from a standing start in 5.1 seconds and has a top speed limited to 210 km/h.

Its more modest power output makes it the longer of the two variants, offering up to 381 miles.

The Macan Turbo steps things up with a massive 630 hp for short bursts of overboost thanks to a larger electric motor setup.

Costing £95,000 at launch, it’s almost £25,000 more than the top-of-the-range petrol Macan (Macan GTS).

This also means it develops 196bhp more than the most powerful petrol Macan currently available in showrooms, although the range is slightly less than the Macan 4 at just 367 miles.

Speaking of the combustion-engined Macan – of which there is no longer a diesel variant sold – it will remain in dealerships throughout 2024 and 2025, Porsche UK said, but will eventually be replaced by this next-generation car. Next year.

At 4,784mm long, 1,938mm wide and 1,622mm high, the new electric SUV is 103mm longer, 15mm wider and 2mm lower than the Macan we’ve seen over the last decade.

The wheelbase is also 86mm longer, at 2,893mm, which in theory should mean more interior space.

Further back, the boot – at 540 liters – is 43 liters larger than that offered by the petrol Macan. And there is also a “frunk” (front trunk) of 84 liters in the space left by the combustion engine.

So when can you expect to get your hands on your freshly ordered Macan?

Not for a while, it seems.

Production at the Leipzig plant in Germany – where the petrol Macan, Cayenne and Panamera are all built – doesn’t start until later in the year.

Patience will have to be a virtue for customers, but given the nearly limitless list of options, this should give buyers plenty of time to tinker with Porsche’s configurator to make the electric Macan meet their exact specifications.
