An arctic blast regularly hits large swathes of the United States and, getting into the snowmageddon spirit, a New York nightclub has undergone a winter makeover in hopes of luring adventurous partygoers out of their apartments.

“I used to throw parties in Austria for people like Arnold Schwarzenegger “He loves skiing and partying – so I wanted to bring some of that après-ski atmosphere to New York,” nightlife guru Albert Trummer tells me from his Manhattan nightclub, which has quickly become one of the trendiest places in the city.

The Austrian opened his underground club DOM a little over a year ago, and thanks to his extensive relationships, he has hosted numerous parties for major brands and celebrities, with Alicia Keys being the the latest A-lister spotted there dance all night.

Trummer is known for his wild imagination – he designed his old bar in Chinatown after an apothecary with drinks marketed for their medicinal qualities – and now he’s sprinkled a little magic on DOM in the form of a makeover after ski.

With the help of a local designer, Trummer transformed his salubrious Gramercy Park hideaway into a winter wonderland, which he says was inspired by his days throwing parties on the slopes of Lech, Austria, where everyone from Schwarzenegger to members of the British royal family were in tow. .

“It was a great time in the 90s, so much fun and now my club definitely takes me back to that time. It’s all about great DJs, a great atmosphere and a crowd that wants to do the party,” Albert reflects.

Trummer says people should bring out their best winter clothes for a ski-themed session at the DOM.

The club will be open daily from 8pm until early morning and there will be no charges – but Albert says there is a strict door policy.

He likes to think of his clientele as sophisticated party people, who dress to impress but don’t take themselves too seriously.

Entering the club after its Alpine facelift, you’re suddenly transported to a European-style chalet with frosted fir trees, twinkling fairy lights and blizzards courtesy of a snow machine.

One thing that remains in place is Trummer’s extensive art collection, with a side room off the main club area filled with contemporary wall hangings and original sculptures.

To get people in the mood, Trummer’s team of mixologists (which includes his equally charismatic son, Jakob) have also launched a special drinks menu, with select libations including glühwein, hot toddies and hot cider .

Trummer says a soft launch of his après-ski spot saw people arriving with everything from ski goggles to fur hats, and he imagines even wackier ensembles will pop up in the weeks to come.

There will also be Alpine shots, with a little of Trummer’s punchy 80-proof walnut elderberry liqueur added to the mix.

He said: “I love it, people really go to town. That’s what I love about this place, it can really be transformed and people take on their character. We’ve had jungle parties, Studio 54 parties, art parties in Miami…the list goes on.

I said goodbye to Trummer, warmed not only by one of his libations, but also by his infectiously optimistic and dreamy spirit.
