Jets acquire veteran center Sean Monahan in trade with Canadiens


The Winnipeg Jets have strengthened their depth in the middle.

Winnipeg acquired veteran center Sean Monahan from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a 2024 first-round pick and a conditional 2027 third-round pick, the Jets announced Friday.

Monahan, measuring six feet two inches and 202 pounds, had 13 goals and 35 points in 49 games, making this his second campaign with the Habs. He has also won 55 percent of his faceoffs over the past two years.

A former sixth overall pick, Monahan spent the first nine years of his NHL career with the Calgary Flames before being traded to Montreal in August 2022.

The 29-year-old from Brampton, Ontario has 514 points (231 goals, 283 assists) in 730 career games. His best season was 2018–19 when he tallied 82 points (34 goals, 48 ​​assists) and was the recipient of the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, an award that recognizes sportsmanship combined with a high level of play on ice.

Monahan will be an unrestricted free agent after this season.

The Jets sit in third place in the Central Division standings, two points behind the division-leading Colorado Avalanche.
