A former White House lawyer for Donald Trump said Wednesday he was “not surprised” that the former president was seeking a new representative for his appeal of the defamation trial verdict, denouncing Trump lawyer Alina Habba’s handling of the case. Asset announcement On Tuesday evening, he was seeking a new lawyer for his appeal of the $83.3 million verdict in the defamation lawsuit filed by writer E. Jean Carroll. Habba, who served as Trump’s lead lawyer and frequently confronted with the judge presiding throughout the trial, handled the case “mafia style,” Ty Cobb told CNN on Wednesday, according to HuffPost.
“She did what he wanted. She articulated her political narrative of victimization and injustice in the justice system and made outlandish claims, including conflict claims“, continued Cobb. “And she lost, so she’s a loser. I’m not surprised Trump is seeking representation on appeal.”
CNN legal analyst Elie Honig echoed Cobb’s lack of surprise, explaining in a separate appearance Wednesday that when a lawyer and his client receive a verdict like the jury’s, they often look for a different lawyer for the call.
“This is my assessment of Alina Habba’s performance as a lawyer,” Honig said in a clip reported by Raw story. “The good news is that she is clearly passionate and believes in her client, and she is quite effective at communicating a simple message. The downside is that she doesn’t know what she is doing in the courtroom. ” Honig went on to say that Habba “can’t even do things you learn in evidence class” like moving exhibits and enforcing hearsay rules, citing the court transcript.
“The other thing is – and look, this may be an impossible task – she had no control over her client,” Honig said, adding: “Allowing her client to mumble audibly in front of “The jury, to walk out during the other side’s closing argument, is simply inexcusable, and I think that is reflected in the enormous verdict that was imposed on them.”
